Greens welcome the news that East Renfrewshire Council will be investing £32 million in social housing over the next five years, as this will increase the number of warm, secure, affordable homes in the area. We also believe that more needs to be done to build an East Renfrewshire that is fit for all of its residents to live in.
East Renfrewshire Council’s Local Housing Strategy show shows serious housing need across East Ren, and the council has recently put forwards plans in its second Local Development Plan that involve releasing greenfield land for ten out of thirteen proposed housing developments.
We are concerned about the potential impact of this move, which could see a weakening of the established greenbelt for private housing developments, and which therefore fails to deal with the lack of truly affordable housing in the area. Greens believe that common land should serve the common good, and that we need to preserve green space while also tackling the housing crisis and ensuring that new developments are served by good transport links and local amenities.
How can this be achieved?
Green MSP Andy Wightman has laid out a number of ideas, including capping the value of land with planning permission to allow councils to get more for their money. Greens have championed increased regulation and rent caps in the private sector, which would go some way to dealing with housing need caused by poor quality or overpriced homes. We will also look for ways to bring unused land and housing into use, and work to ensure that East Renfrewshire Council take every opportunity to maximise energy efficiency and save on fuel bills for tenants.
If elected to East Renfrewshire Council, my fellow candidate Laura Stevens and I will champion social housing over private housing, and put forward the sort of radical solutions that are needed to provide high quality, well insulated and well connected housing for all without damaging our environment.
