Statement on the proposed closure of Barrhead police station

A good police service needs an approachable face and a familiar location. These are provided by having a local police station, so I’m concerned by the impact that the proposed closure of Barrhead police station could have on the community.  These worries are especially strong when it comes to those who cannot rely on a telephone or the internet to contact the police, many of whom are likely to be older or more vulnerable.

We will work towards local policing that is accountable to independent, democratically controlled police authorities

Scottish Greens understand the importance of community links in policing, which is why our Holyrood manifesto called for increased investment on the local level.  Our justice spokesperson John Finnie has written to the the Chief Constable to raise concerns about the impact these proposals could have on Barrhead, and other communities all over Scotland.
