Jackson Carlaw MSP is to be commended in speaking out against the sale of Bonnyton House, the only residential care facility that remained in public hands in East Renfrewshire. However he would do well to note that the path of austerity pursued by his colleagues in Westminster has a direct impact on this state of affairs. Cuts to public services made by the Tory government have resulted in more local authorities struggling to support the needs of the community. It seems that Mr Carlaw will only speak out against such decisions when it has an impact in his own backyard. The situation will worsen as the Tory Westminster government continues on this disaster course.
The council tax freeze pursued by the SNP government at Holyrood has added to this ongoing crisis. This system of taxation is outdated and needs scrapped, not just tinkered with. The Scottish Green Party have consistently proposed alternatives to the existing council tax system including a Residential Property Tax that could raise essential funds to keep services like Bonnyton House open and in public, rather than private, hands.
